Cosmetic procedures performed by men quadruple in 5 years

In five years, men's demand for cosmetic surgery in Brazil has quadrupled, according to the Brazilian Society of Plastic Surgery. In 2017, 72,000 procedures were performed per year. Now, there are 276,000.

On stage, actor Thiago Uriart has performed more than 200 times in just one play, in which he discusses the relationship of a couple in crisis. The actor, who works with appearance and image, needs to always look good and because of this he decided to improve his appearance: he sought rhinomodeling, a cosmetic procedure that lifts the tip and shapes the nose.

“My nose changed a lot in photos and videos. It frustrated me and made me a little sad to see my nose there. With the results of the rhinomodeling, I became more confident and I thought I was more beautiful. It gave the photos something different, which was really cool for me,” she says.

The surgery, which was performed in May of this year, had immediate results, and he was very satisfied. Now the actor intends to have a rhinoplasty. “I sought this out because it was something I needed to change for myself, to feel better about myself,” he says.

Like Thiago, other men are embracing cosmetic procedures in Brazil, which is the world’s leading plastic surgery provider. Plastic surgeon Thamy Motoki explains that the most sought-after procedures by men are blepharoplasty, which is eyelid surgery; liposuction; and gynecomastia correction, which involves breast augmentation. “Men take a little longer than women to decide to undergo the procedure. They put it off, perhaps out of fear or some apprehension, but when they decide to undergo surgery, they are very determined. I want to do it tomorrow,” says the doctor.

According to experts, this increase shows a growing concern among men regarding their appearance. Investment fund analyst Alisson dos Santos Araújo agrees with the interventions: “A good workout at the gym, for the appearance of the body, is good for your health, grooming your beard, taking care of things is always good.”

“I don’t have the money to take care of myself, but if I had the money, I would already be at a beauty clinic changing everything, my body, my face, everything,” says Rodrigo Rodrigues, sales representative. For many women, the change is welcome. “By taking care of your beauty first, you already have the confidence that other aspects of your life will also be well taken care of, I think it goes in that direction,” says financial analyst Bárbara Cundari.
